New York votes to put abortion rights in the state constitution

New York voters have approved an amendment to the state constitution designed to protect the state’s current access to abortion along with protections against various forms discrimination, according to a call by The Associated Press.

The first state to ban abortion after the fall of Roe v. Wade just became the first state to have a near-total abortion ban reversed by popular vote. The people of Missouri voted on Tuesday to create a constitutional right to “reproductive freedom”—defined as the ability to make and carry out one’s own decisions about abortion, birth control, and healthcare during pregnancy—approving Amendment 3 by almost 54 percent of the vote as of 11:30 p.m. Central Time, according to the Associated Press.
Florida’s abortion rights amendment just failed

Florida’s six-week abortion ban will remain the law of the land, as an abortion rights constitutional amendment failed Tuesday night. With 91 percent of the vote tallied as of 9:20 p.m., support for Florida’s Amendment 4 hovered around 57 percent, according to Associated Press projections—shy of the 60 percent threshold required to pass.

Arizonans voted to create broad constitutional protections for abortion, a victory for progressive groups who had pinned their hopes on the state for a major win this year. Arizona’s measure, which had 62% support early Wednesday, protects abortion access for about two months longer than the current state limit at 15 weeks. In nearby Nevada, voters also voted to protect abortion rights by large margins.

Americans in 10 US states are voting on Tuesday on whether to enshrine the right to abortion into their state constitutions. In some states, like Arizona and Florida, they have the opportunity to overturn bans that state legislatures passed after the US supreme court overturned Roe v Wade in June 2022, doing away with the federal right to an abortion.

The Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA) has been introduced into Congress and will protect a woman's health, ability to make her own decisions, and constitutional rights.
Despite its popularity among most Americans, the Women's Health Protection Act passed in 2021 in the House of Representatives under Democratic Nancy Pelosi's leadership but failed to advance in the Senate due to a Republican blockade.
